It’s A Wonderful Life

Day 344

“I have come to realize that each day has a certain energy that it carries. So to maximize my fullest potential, I jump in that wave each day…Wake up, meditate, feel the energy… Understand that everything on my to do list may not work out exactly as planned…Go with the flow, living in the flow, is setting your goals, but also giving space for things to unfold from the unseen.”

– Lisa Guthrie

Life doesn’t always go according to our plan, but it always goes according to plan; Divine plan. Sometimes when everything goes wrong, things end up going better than we could have imagined.

Have you ever had one of those days when you wake up and one thing goes wrong, and then everything else seems to snowball downhill from there? Like your coffee machine breaks down, and then there’s no hot water, then your car keys go missing, and that makes you late for an important meeting. By the time you start your day, you’re buzzing with anxiety and feeling extremely stressed out.

When that happens you have two choices: either you can stop fighting it and go with it, or bang your head against the wall in frustration. You may think that either way, things will continue to go wrong, but actually, when you stop trying to control the situation and accept it, things will start to turn in your favor.

“We give energy to what we focus on, thereby bringing it into our experience. So, more than ever, when things are not going the way we want them to, we must keep negative thoughts from becoming the central conversation in our minds.”

When you let go and go with the flow, things have a way of falling into place, and often that place is better than where you were trying to go. Not only does the apparent madness come to an end, you find your keys, a colleague brings you a mocha latte, and because you were late, you were able to answer the call from that person you were hoping would ask you out.

go-with-the-flow

I wanted to give you a real-life example of this principle, but nothing was coming to mind, so I took a break in the middle of writing this post, hoping I’d think of a fitting example to finish with. In the meantime, I watched an episode of Pure Genius, and of course, the storyline was the perfect example.

In this episode, the main character’s dream of leading a normal life, which includes watching tv with his family  – something he didn’t have in his own childhood, seems out-of-the-cards after his love-interest turns him down, the potential cure for his rare illness is stymied, and his hope of helping a young patient beat cancer fails. Instead of getting bummed out, he decides to seize the day, and live his dreams now; he accepts his circumstances, but he doesn’t let them overcome him.

life-is-like-a-river

In the closing scene, we see him watching It’s A Wonderful Life by himself in the office lounge on Christmas eve. One by one, each of his colleagues joins him and it turns into a heart-warming scene of a “family” watching tv together.

I know it’s a script, but sometimes, that’s just what we need to get into the flow. When you go with the flow, things begin to fall into place with ease, and we make room for the wonderfully unexpected gifts from the Universe.
