What’s The Point?

Day 327

“We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success. We often discover what will do by finding out what will not do; and probably he who never made a mistake never made a discovery.”

– Samuel Smiles

I didn’t sleep very well on Sunday night. I kept having a nagging feeling that I missed the point of the post I had written that day. Being a recovering perfectionist, I still get caught in the mire of striving for perfection, and then I need to steer my mind to remember that perfection isn’t the goal; a good life is.

“Super perfection holds you back from putting things out there.”

– Ashley Taylor Yannello

You see, I spent a good portion of my day on Sunday writing that post. It was meant to be written in a different style in response to a blog challenge, and that was my intention, but I ended up writing a post in my normal style, and embedding the response to the challenge in it. At some point in the middle of my sleep, I realized that I had missed the point.

When I got up yesterday morning, I saw that my mistake was actually a good thing – I had really written two posts, and all I needed to do was to separate them. So, I gave the different-styled post center stage, and the bonus was that now Monday’s post was already written.

The other thing that came out of this “mistake” was that it brought to light a reminder of this lesson: Not only is it ok to make mistakes, but those “mistakes” are really our internal guidance systems leading us towards our own unique paths en route to fulfilling our desires.

I thought I had missed the point, but I actually got the point, and a whole lot more – because of my detour, I found an old recipe I had wished for many times; I became mindful that instead of discarding the seemingly old and outdated, we just need to look with fresh eyes to discover the treasures that have always been there waiting for us to find; and I was reminded of the very important lesson that there are no mistakes – your interpretation, even when it’s “wrong,” it’s right. Your “mistakes” lead you to wherever you are meant to go.
